Well, believe it or not, when we moved we loaded everything from the garden shed itself to tools and pots and propagation supplies. Everything except. the. mower. Somewhere along the line we decided to leave it at the old house.
Now, this house sits on a lot 2,000 square feet larger than the last house, and it has a lawn. A wrap around the house lawn. And from appearances, people in this neighborhood prize their lawns. So, we needed a mower.
This relocation has been tough, and a lot of thing are "on hold" until we sell the other house. We just don't have the money to run out and get everything we "need" to get settled here, yet. And those things that we do need need to be a good value. My first step has always been to research and shop online, whether I pick up the item from a brick and mortar later or not. And in this small town I have already turned to more online shopping than in the past.
Dear hubby would have loved a cheap riding lawn mower, but we finally settled on a self propelled mower with a mulching blade. It was important to me to find a good mulching blade because I practice lawn maintenance that supports water savings and organic practices. I leave the clippings on the lawn, yep folks, that's right. The clippings will act as a nitrogen fertilizer for your lawn as they decay and break down into the soil. And I leave the lawn between 2"-2.5" to shade the roots and promote water retention.
If you have not shopped online before it can be overwhelming. I actually started shopping online way back in the late 90s, and have had a lot of good luck. BUT today's internet market is a lot different. I turn to sites with comparison shopping technology, basically the search technology to bring everything together so that you can compare items and prices without going crazy tabbing back and forth. I just started using Become.com and like the categories and indexing. I got totally sidetracked from the garden and found a purple couch I love, it may be a little too retro for this Victorian style home, but I am going to run it by hubby.
There are other items that I want for the garden and outdoor "living room" that I am planning for this yard. I don't want to spend a ton of money, and I don't want to drive all over town looking for hot deals, but I do want metal headboards to use decoratively in the garden beds. You have probably seen the type, old rod iron style frames used as plant supports. There are a lot of roses and traditional cutting flowers in the yard and I think the look would complement the house style.
