month 6 - January 2008

Design and PlanningWinter is a great time for planning and research. We had measured and gridded out the yard during the fall and spent January determining our habitat goals, edible wants and needs and mapped out sun and shade beds. We also outlined the drip irrigation system that we would convert the existing sprinkler to in the Spring.
Here are pictures of the Christmas tree composted on the front parking strip and the trunk waiting to become next years yule logs.
It was pretty hard to picture what would come in the next few months as Spring approached, but planning right plant for the right place and determining water needs had us peering through the window in anticipation.

Habitat Goals:
Attract Butterflies, Hummingbirds and Pollinators
Create a Monarch Way station
Edible Goals:
Identify fruit trees for fall 2008 planting
Plan and begin vegetable beds -
Establish blueberry bushes and strawberry plants (transplants)
Natural Technique Goals:
Get certified with the WA Toxics Coalition as a pesticide free zone

and . . .

Compost, Compost, Compost !!!
